With Kitsune Tails, Players Can Do Speed Runs and More As Crazy Like A Fox

…or should that be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when considering the rich environments that can experienced when entering the exotic worlds offered in this game?

Kitsune Tails Logo DesignThe world of Shinto religion comes alive in the videogame Kitsune Tails. And true to this product’s namesake, it’s about a young lady fox embarking on a hero’s journey, and encountering various creatures and yokai along the way. Some are (thankfully) good-natured and others evil. After many weeks of casual play, I’m finally finding where I can purchase power ups. Technically, you can’t buy them right from the get go, and you can find that place located in the village’s main hub. I was wondering where that was hiding and it took searching to find it!

There’s no Mac port. I’m on this operating system more often and the PC laptop I own doesn’t allow for hours of long play unless I tweak the settings.

In this retro platformer, I found more of the latter in the actual game-play and the former in the cut-scenes. The graphics of the game depict everything in the style of a classic 8-bit game. It’s basically Super Mario Bros. 3 / World with all the bonus material later development of this property now offers. That includes speed running, creating custom maps, and playing carnival-like minigames (the best part). Players can use simple-to-use modding tools, easy-to-learn Lua scripting and the open source Tiled Map Editor to create their open custom levels if they find this game too easy!

Unlike the Nintendo game, I found myself on a mission to deliver messages and the story that I’m discovering is rather cute. The same-sex relationship that’s at the forefront recognises diversity and as for whether these characters find true love at the end, I shan’t say. I’m still working on it, and when it comes to how challenging this game is, I’m glad there’s three settings. I am very much a casual gamer, and to not always “die” is helpful to power through this game.

In standard mode, the challenges aren’t too bad. The level design are quite standard, and my most favourite challenging ones concern navigating the haunted homes, where the light source is limited! It makes for something different.

I’m still uncertain if I enjoy using the keyboard more over my controller and arcade game stick. I recently gained Nintendo’s official one for my Switch so I can enjoy my bullet-rail games as they’re intended, but for platformers, just how well I can stop on a dime is very important! I searched the settings and found nothing.

Also, when I assume the coins can be gathered to purchase things, I have yet to find the store! Players can find powerups in the game for immediate use, and the ability to construct your own levels will be made available upon the official release. There’s a lot of good things going for it in the preview build I played. Although I didn’t get too far, I enjoyed what I saw. The soundtrack will stick to you like Wild Arms (Sony), and for the story itself, I’ll try to do my best to “reach” the end–if there’s such a thing in this genre.

“Kitsune Tails is so much more than just a visual nod to the classic 8-bit platformers,” said Eniko Fox, Founder, Kitsune Games. “We built this from the ground up to offer the community an accessible, diverse game-design experience — in addition to telling our own tale with those very same tools. We can’t wait to see what you all create!”
