Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong. A Deadly Showdown to Keep The Monsterverse Warner.

It’s tough not to be reminded of when Godzilla faced The Avengers way back when while reading Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #5Spoiler Alert

Five issues into Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, what’s presented in the multiverse crossover is epic in scope and it won’t be a game changer since it’s more of a story developed to keep interest in the Monsterverse alive. The wait for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is only two months away, but after seeing Godzilla Minus One, I think I’ve been spoiled. The stakes aren’t quite the same in this comic book world.

With this series, I’m caring more about what the beast represents and unless I’m a long time fan of the Justice League comics, I’m not as invested into this particular world. Also, I imagine the “Death” of Superman (again) is hardly a shock. After his fall, it’s up to the Justice League to figure out why a Pacific Rim type rift has formed to invite the Monsterverse in.

The revelations that’s offered in this issue offers a valid reason for why this mighty beast is what he is. He’s out to restore balance to the world by eliminating threats that can endanger it. I had to chuckle because he’s essentially Lex Luthor in a giant green suit. Both charater’s animosity for Kal-el is natural.

As for the Toymaker, the person responsible for teleporting the big monster here, his agenda is rather crazy!

The story by Brian Buccellato is better thought out and when compared to what I recall of The Avengers facing Godzilla, I can’t decide which one I like more. The stakes are different, and just how the Leaguers deal with the beast involves somehow getting Kong involved! The art by Christian Duce looks terrific, and really makes the kaijus look menacing.

But as any regular comic book reader knows, Supes can’t be killed. He merely goes into hibernation until his body can regenerate. Perhaps that’s why Batman isn’t worried. The first three issues didn’t offer a lot of Kaiju sized action, but by the fourth, it gets better and the fifth, Godzilla is fighting Tiamat from his universe and the Kraken, which is DC’s. Both are water creatures, and that can make for some fun times when considering they can team up to defeat big G.

As eager as I am to enjoy viewing this war like a bystander, there’s still the other story concerning the leaguers sort of investigating the mystery about how these kaijus arrived. Some of them are asking why this creature was brought to their universe, and it’s amusing how MONARCH pops out of the woodwork to explain it. But I still have other questions which I hope the final issue will address.

When Kong is in the title, it’s safe to say that somehow, he’ll be goaded to wrangle Godzilla home. That’s, of course, being saved for last and hopefully we see another smackdown to make watching this tag team wrestling match worthwhile.
