Freaks (2018) to Redefine a Tired Genre

These Freaks are mutants with abilities to alter the world ala X-Men. They have powers and everyone fears what they can do. The government wants to exploit them and drive them into hiding because all they want is to be left alone. The story delivers the goods in what humanity fears when there’s no Professor Xavier around to be leader. The concept looks like it may be very similar to the still to be released New Mutants. Also, the narrative approach is very similar to Brightburn.

This movie is one to root for. Lexy Kolker gives a stunning performance which is just as terrific as Haley Joel Osment’s tormented view of the world (from Sixth Sense) if not fiercer. When her powers are fully awakened, so does a sense of urgency in what Chloe desires the most–to have mother back in her life. After this and with her powers fully awakened, just what she does with them has me shuddering.
