This Seattle convention created to spotlight and empower female artists has announced the inclusion of comics writer, author, and journalist G. Willow Wilson.
Wilson is an award-winning American-born writer whose works are influenced by Middle Eastern culture and the supernatural.
While based in Egypt Wilson wrote her first graphic novel Cairo (2007), an action-adventure, for DC’s Vertigo. Cairo was listed as one of the best graphic novels for teens by the School Library Journal and the American Library Association. Cairo was also named best graphic novel of 2007 by Publishers Weekly and The Edmonton Journal.
Wilson continued her success under the Vertigo banner by creating/writing Air (2008 – 2010), a comic series that gained favourable reviews from The Onion and The Wall Street Journal. Air was nominated in 2009 for an Eisner Award.
Other works for DC have included issues of Superman and the five-issue mini-series Vixen: Return of the Lion starring Justice League member Vixen.
Currently Wilson is writing for the ongoing Marvel Comics property Ms. Marvel whose identity, Kamala Khan, makes the first time a Muslim has ever headlined a Marvel Comic book series. Ms. Marvel won a Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story and was nominated for multiple Eisner Awards including Best New Series and Writer. The first three graphic novel versions of Ms. Marvel reached the top 5 on The New York Times Best Seller list.
As a journalist Wilson has contributed articles to the National Post, The New York Times Magazine, Cairo Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and was a music critic for DigBoston.
Additionally she has published a memior titled The Butterfly Mosque, about life in Egypt during Hosni Mubarak’s presidency and Alif the Unseen (Grove Press) which won the 2013 World Fantasy Award for best novel.
