The anime Weathering with You (天気の子) is more than just a movie about climate change. It’s also about relationships and how people handle crises. Here, Hodaka Morishima (Kotaro Daigo) is not happy with his life and runs away from home. He believes he can do better by himself in Tokyo. However, with no valid credentials, nobody will hire him.

A chance encounter with Hina Amano (Nana Mori) turns out to be the best thing to happen for the lad. The two develop feelings and pretty soon a lot of obstacles get in their way to happiness. One of them includes the fact both are orphans and it doesn’t take very long for social services to catch up to them!

When “Jumbo” is a Tilt-a-Hurl in this Quirky Romance

Her only escape is when she’s at work, alone with her amusement park rides. One night, she checks out the latest installation, a high-flying hurl-a-whirl (as shown in the movie poster) she calls “Jumbo.”

Spielberg doesn’t really need to mentor the talented Zoé Wittock. Her shorts offer great ideas featuring female protagonists struggling with their identity, and her feature film debut certainly shines. It’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Iron Giant. We will never know the origins of the park ride attraction that Jeanne (Noémie Merlant) finds a connection with.

Her rambunctious mother (Emmanuelle Bercot) and beau of the week don’t make for a simple home life. She’s not really connected with her peers either. Her only escape is when she’s at work, alone with her amusement park rides. One night, she checks out the latest installation, a high-flying hurl-a-whirl (as shown in the movie poster) she calls “Jumbo.”

Wotakoi: On Why Love is Hard for Otaku in this Movie Review

This parody on otaku life updates viewers on the term and it doesn’t have to be derogatory. Some folks can get overboard with some aspect of Japanese fandom, but how is that different from Star Wars fans with rooms dedicated to merchandise since its release in 1977? Or how about Transformers or KISS?

Based on the manga of the same name, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (ヲタクに恋は難しい,) by Fujita is a hilarious live action musical comedy that doesn’t require audiences to know anything about the source material.

Narumi Momose (Mitsuki Takahata) is a young office worker who reads yaoi manga. She keeps this fact hidden very well. Also, she likes Hirotaka Nifuji (Kento Yamazaki). They knew each other when really young, and now he’s working in the same building as her. He’s always had difficulty expressing his feelings to her and it’s very amusing to watch them rekindle their relationship. She’s high strung and he’s mild mannered.

Making The Gesture and The Word, A Romantic Film for the Ages

The Gesture and The Word is not entirely about finding love. Instead, the film explores how to open your eyes to the world around you through the lens of a poet.

The Gesture and The Word is not entirely about finding love. Instead, the film explores how to open your eyes to the world around you through the lens of a poet. Postman Gilbert (James Michael Tyler, Friends) has delivered plenty of postcards to Aurore (Roxane Mesquida, Now Apocalypse) and he can’t help but read them. It is an open letter after all; any prying eyes can see it. Though he doesn’t mean to, in what he reads, he becomes attracted to this lady too but has trouble communicating his feelings to her.

A Whisker Away, Slightly Fanciful but not Feline Free

A Whisker Away Picture Still 2By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

A Whisker Away is likely to have accolades who love Shōjo manga more than curious cats wanting the supernatural to play more into this anime. I’m of the latter persuasion and want to know if the mysterious fat cat known as Mask Seller is a Nekomata. This particular type of trickster spirit loves to toy with humans.

Miyo Sasaki (Mirai Shida) is unfortunate to have a chance encounter with him, and part of it is due to finding out her parents are splitting. The Cheshire Cat can take lessons from this guy, and Keith Silverstein in the dubbed version is amazing in the role. It’s familiar and might be inspired by Jemaine Clement’s performance of Tamatoa the Hermit Crab from Moana, As the devil may care feline who trades in noa masks, he has his own agenda. Part of the deal allows the wearer to transform into another species for “immortality.”

Discovering the Science of Ghosts will be … Legendary!

The Science of Ghosts_Title Treatment (jpg)By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

The paranormal is just that … something above and beyond what humanity recognizes in a world as its presently defined. Whether that’d be with entities that defy explanation, namely ghosts, or just learning about what drives us as individuals deep inside, Legendary Comics upcoming graphic novel, The Science of Ghosts, is certainly going to upend the tropes normally explored in this format.

This book is written by Eisner and GLAAD Award-nominated Lilah Sturges (Jack of Fables; Lumberjanes) and I believe her goal is to do just like what M.R. James did when he redefined the genre.

From the Press Release:

The story—centered around Joy Ravenna, a transgender parapsychologist—will feature art by veteran comic book artist Alitha E. Martinez (known for her work on the Eisner Award winner Black Panther: World of Wakanda) and will be available in stores and online in Summer 2021.
