Wild Eye Releasing should pick up the tab to deliver David Sandberg’s sequel to Kung Fury. This homage to various genres, ranging from 80s style tokusatsu to buddy cop to sci-fi is a godsend. Kung Fury 2 is a no hold barred bonkers as Last Action Hero! Thankfully, newcomers or those who haven’t heard of this cult film can find the original on YouTube (or scroll to the end of this article to see the short).
If you are a fan of Power Rangers or even TMNT, this indie movie is for you! It’s a wonderfully hilarious parody of 80s schlock cinema, and all those cheap budget exploitation films from the 70s even count too! Apparently, last Friday a sizzle reel of the sequel leaked online, and with no surprise, it’s no longer available. Other folks may have since reposted it, but there’s no word on when those will disappear too. Someone might attempt to put it online again on another, less vigilant service.
Although the state of completion of this piece is uneven, even I got excited about the callback to the films of yesteryears. Not only did it reflect the works of Arnie from way back, but also there are shades of Mortal Kombat along with many other Street Fighter clones. Another segment includes recounting Fury’s (Sandberg’s) origins and another recaps how his group of mercs took down Adolf Hitler. And true to every conspiracy theory to suggest otherwise, he masterminded his escape.

And it’ll be up to the Thundercops team to capture this Nazi leader again. Instead of playing their next gig at some hole in the wall bar, they’re back to work at the president’s request.
According to the report from Variety: “This was an internal promo video that was never supposed to be seen by the public. I feel bad because it contains a bunch of plot points and temp VFX,” Sandberg told this magazine. “I hope at least people can see the passion that we poured into the movie, the world deserves to see it as it was seen. This movie has been held hostage for the past 5 years, but I promise to keep fighting for it and make sure this film gets the chance it truly deserves.”
When considering the releases from the Visual Vengeance label from the aforementioned distributor, I believe Sandberg’s work has a very good chance. The question is if he’s okay with just a home video shelf product or if he wants theatrical. At film festivals and midnight madness events worldwide, the chances are far better to get this work screened, and I’ll be keeping my eyes out in hopes the “accidental” leak set in motion a way to move this film out of legal limbo and into the market as soon as possible.
