As much as I love a certain paranormal enthusiast, I think he’s pining for the fjords by agreeing to be the host of The UnBelievable with Dan Aykroyd. This latest History Channel offering is produced by Six West Media and Wonderland West is simply copying from William Shatner’s The UnXplained, and when we’re dealing with some rather semi inspired titles to entice folks to watch, I was still curious.
Thankfully, what this on screen and off-screen Ghostbuster shows is in just how passionate he is about the subject. He acknowledges his family’s lifelong interest in the spiritual world (I.e. ghosts) in the first episode, “Strange Locations,” that’s dedicated to all things spooky. From a book to being at the forefront of the spiritualist movement in Canada, the gambit is well covered. Besides introducing a few familiar locales that are cursed, there are others not as often talked about.
With no surprise, they spend a lot of time examining The Michigan Triangle. What’s revealed is nothing new, and as for other familiar spots–namely Waverly and Island of Dolls–retreading the same old facts is not needed. It’s like these production companies don’t care to talk to one another to avoid rinse and repeating. At least one spot I’m not as intimate with includes the Island of Snakes, Waitomo Caves (pictured below) and Mt. Elgon.

After years of watching similarly designed programs, the feeling of déjà vu will occur more often than not. Thankfully, the next episode, “Strange Deaths” is much better. It offers a lot of stories concerning the myriad of ways that one has died from. The range includes death by molasses to spontaneous combustion. I counted at least a dozen!
In the following episodes over the December month, “Astonishing Bodies,” and “Weird Weapons” finally get to reports that make this series worth watching. Despite a weak start, The UnBelievable has its place showing “Outlandish Inventions” as not even William Shatner’s weekly series into the unexplainable subpar. Few of these programs are worth rewatching. Thankfully, the way Dan connects with the content looks heartfelt rather than be a repeat of what the producers paid him to say in Psi Factor!
As for the cast of scientists, former TV hosts and what not, Dan Wildman returns to offer his 5 cents worth, Adam Richman to discuss the wonders of New Zealand. On this list is Dr. Thor Hanson, David Mizejewki, Yohuru Williams, Edward T. O’Donnell and many more. Most of these individuals are credible. While that’s good to make this show believable, I would say so as long as the information is presented in historical context, I’m sold. But as for what’s considered paranormal, all I have to ask is who are ya gonna call? Why isn’t Lloyd Auerbach involved? I consider him the most honest out of all the personalities when considering the topics he explores.
