When Going Green is Environmentally Friendly for Scott Duvall’s Latest Comic Book Crowdfunding Project….

What’s offered in Going Green looks very Stranger Things-ish, and and it’s a work I’m sure even Steven Speilberg would love.

Going Green Comic Book CoverScott Duvall and his team are “Going Green” with their latest comic book idea. They describe it as Locke & Key meets the biological horror of Annihilation in a modern-day monster comic with a heart. It’s being crowdfunded so that it can be delivered directly to fans of their work, and this listing can be found on Zoop.

In this story, Cliff and Molly are your usual teens, enjoying life out in what appears to be somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. However, one day, their dad gets injured and recovery isn’t possible. The boy has a difficult task of identifying the body, and afterwards, instead of the traditional burial, the individual they talk to suggests the family should inter the remains another way and help restore the forests nearby. But as for what kind of strange magic exists deep within the woods, something is causing the dead to come alive!

The kids are curious as to why it’s happening, and while they go searching for answers, more recently deceased individuals are rising! It’s as though Halloween isn’t over. There’s a teaser promo video made to showcase the work that’s been done so far. What’s presented has a Stephen Spielberg type vibe to it, and that’s enough for me to say let’s help these creators!

There’s approximately more than a week left until this campaign ends and hopefully this group of talented writers and artists will get the funds to finish this project. Duvall’s work in Army of Darkness/ Bubba Ho-Tep shows where his passion lies, and I’ll gladly read anything that he comes up with when the mad science (or the supernatural) is involved! I’ve also interviewed him, and he was a joy to speak with.

Since then, he’s written Eerie Cuties: Sisters, Zii and the Troublemakers along with many others. His co-writer is Sean Reliford, an indie filmmaker from Dayton, Ohio who is making his comic book writing debut. Some may have seen his work, Persons of Interest.

And artist Vincenzo Federici is a name many should know. He’s worked with Duvall in that aforementioned crossover, and it’s great to learn they’re collaborating again in this latest. His comic, The Kabuki Fight, is worth tracking down! Also, some may recognise this name, as he’s also done work on IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Rounding out the team includes Michele Monte. This colourist’s most recognised work is Speed Republic, and letterer Taylor Esposito teaches typesetting at Ghost Glyph Studios.

What’s offered so far looks very Stranger Things-ish; The concept of getting cremated and letting your essence refuel the land isn’t all that new. I’ve seen advertisements offering this service. As for whether this idea is viable, that’s subject to how one feels towards environmentalism. Perhaps the writing duo saw some promotion and wanted to truly examine where this would go in an Army of Darkness kind of way. I won’t say what has been pitched in the document I was sent, but when I know what’s coming in the story synopsis, that’s the vibe I get. What’s presented isn’t entirely like Island of Dr. Moreau, but it comes close!

Although this initial plan is to present Going Green as a five issue mini-series, things can change. The challenges of publishing independently is tough! I don’t think this comic should be ignored as one important themes going behind this work is in how the kids are coping with the loss of their father. And when it seems he’s coming back to life like in the Swamp Thing, I doubt what’s still to come will mirror those tales from long ago (or even the televised series that I’m more familiar with). It’s a tale I’d love to read, and if it can’t be published independently, hopefully Dynamite or Dark Horse Comics will consider picking this title up and publishing it as a graphic novel.
