To watch Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on home video again is a joy and what’s said here is more of a look at the bonus features. Also, after looking at many of the Universal Studios recent disc releases, one detail I’m greatly appreciating is a consistent menu design. It’s a step to giving all of this company’s releases a regular look, and it’s a very easy to navigate.
As for the extras, half of what’s available are for youths to enjoy. The other segments give a bit of insight for future animators to understand the production. The segments I enjoyed more are when the performers are behind the microphone. Banderas is amazing in these parts, and in contrast, the kitty cam is filler. It’s milking a concept not everyone can appreciate, but if you love watching cats being cats, this video segment is worth leave running in the background while doing chores. It may entertain your own cats at home.
As expected, the deleted scenes add nothing new to the tale. What’s implied suggests trimming the unneeded bits of to keep the story tight. If anything, I was more intrigued by the animated short, The Trident. It goes into greater depth into one of Puss’ eight deaths and it could easily have been longer. I also suspect these tales can make up part of this franchise’s continuation between other Shrek-verse releases.
Perhaps we’ll get a one off set of shorts that looks at when Puss died. The darker content would throw fans’ expectations of the window. While the movie is great at starting us down that road, what’s next has not been announced. However, I think some retrospective may be in the works.

- Deleted Scenes
Potty Break, Love and Death, and Wall O’Snakes - A Cast of Characters – We get new introductions to who Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Goldilocks and the Bears, Jack Horner, and Wolf are. They’re respectable reminders of what long fans already know.
- In the Beginning – Here, we’re reminded of where the series came from. It reminds us of his days in Shrek and how he became his own independent entity.
