Indonesian superhero movies don’t get a lot of love abroad. That’s because there aren’t that many and to criticise them against the heavyweights from America isn’t fair. As a result, these works really need word of mouth to get known. Legend of Gatotakaca (Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca) released in its native country last year, and now has international distribution courtesy of Well GO USA.

After it’s run on digital, it will be released to home video on March 21. This tale is about Yuda, a young man, finding a secret prophecy that will be key to surviving the battle against an ancient evil.

On paper, the concept of Javanese mythology brought to life in modern society sounds good. As for whether this individual is a mortal incarnation of Gatotakaca or not, the curious will have to watch this film to find out! This movie is set to reinterpret his role from the Mahābhārata in a modern context, and directing this movie is Hanung Bramantyo (Getting Married).

Legend of Gatotakaca

Rizky Nazar (Mecca I’m Coming, Bittersweet Seventeen) stars in this film as Yuda along with Yasmin Napper (Imperfect), Edward Akbar (Foxtrot Six), Sigi Wimala (Macabre), Yayan Ruhian (The Raid 2, The Raid: Redemption, Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens), and Cecep Arif Rahman (John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum, Gundala). With such a diverse cast bringing some American filmmaking experience back home, chances are reasonable that some of that style will be included since most films are considered a collaborative effort from producers, filmmakers and its performers instead of one vision.

Synopsis:

After witnessing the shocking murder of his best friend by a masked assassin with terrifying superpowers, Yuda stumbles upon a secret prophecy long concealed by powerful people. After unlocking dormant abilities of his own, Yuda discovers that he—an ordinary college kid with no belief in the old legends—may very well be the key to winning the upcoming battle against an ancient evil.
