While How to Train Your Dragon 3 is a year away from release, the past ten days have been exciting for fans keeping tabs on reveals. This work has been finished for some time, and it’s supposed to get a preview at Annecy International Animation Festival next week. A teaser trailer may well be released during or afterwards.

For now, the release of the poster shows Toothless meeting the female of the species, a Light Fury, and all hearts will be aflutter for this pairing. Adorable as she is, one big question many will ask is where has she been? The world is large enough for any serpentine species to find places to hide in, hence the title.

The reason is that the new villain, Grimmel (voiced by F. Murray Abraham), has an agenda. He’s wiped out nearly all of the male of the species, and Toothless is next!

Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) has settled in with his new role of King of Berk. He’s unlikely to change Grimmel’s ways, but he will no doubt try. Though some years have no doubt passed (images from Licensing Expo reveals a new look for the cast, including a moustached Fishlegs), Toothless may well be the awkward teen this time around. He will be courting the opposite sex in many an awkward moment. When comparing how this series went in seeing how Hiccup finally won over Astrid, this contrast is going to be amusing. The humans are destined to wed at some point. Just when … that detail is uncertain. It may occur as the finale to this work.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Namely, the focus will move away from the original team to another generation. Confirmed on Berk’s Grapevine is the release of Dragons: Rescue Riders. My worry is that it can follow the template of a certain Transformers mini-series. It’s unlikely to. One safe bet is the odd appearance of the original team from time to time to offer advice. This work is scheduled for release sometime in 2019.

While the DreamWorks franchise seems safe from obliteration, the hope here is for the dragons to not fly away for good. Cassandra Cowell’s books sadly showed that they were never safe from humans. This world saw Hiccup let Toothless go. The Dragons have retreated from the human realm, away from mortal threats. Just how this saga will finish will have me there opening night, and hoping Odinson have a better future in store for them.
