Superman Unveiled: A Brilliant New Beginning for the DC Universe!

This review and analysis of James Gunn’s Superman examines its strengths and weaknesses. Despite curious role shifts, what’s offered is as inherently good as reading an Alan Moore comic book.

Superman (2025) posterSpoiler Alert

Dissecting the text that begins James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s restart of Superman (2025) reveals a grand vision. Even with some unusual choices in supporting roles to introduce this tale, this movie is terrific for fans of the “Gods and Monsters” narrative arc as they reinvent what the animated film, Justice League: Gods and Monsters tried a decade ago. Alan Burnett and Bruce Timm packed a lot of ideas into a 75 minute film. I loved it, but sadly, the reception for it was poor. Even though the ideas continued to be explored in future DC Comics / Warner Bros. releases, not every work was as hardcore. When Nosferatu (2024) Is More Than Another Lustful Incubus on the Loose!

Few films acknowledge Nosferatu as a spirit rather than something physical. And when this remake only enhances what’s previously known, the presentation is much more sinister!

Nosferatu (2024) Movie PosterTo answer the question of how many movies were made featuring Count Orlok aka Nosferatu is five. There’s the original film (1922) and the back-to-back takes from 2023 (subtitled Symphony of Horror) and Robert Egger’s tale, released December 2024. Although the staggered streaming and home video release of Renfield is unusual, I’m just Vlad this movie is finally available in Canada. Now that is out of my system, I can take a bite at what makes this horror comedy the fun romp that it is. Although I knew this film would be over the top, what the featurettes offered in explaining the making of the film helped me appreciate it more. That’s because I’ve looked at other interpretations of this character in other media; although they took on a more serious tone in interpreting the adage, “The blood is the life!” this film goes down a different route.

From comic book to novella to this film, the gambit is well covered to explain why the title character loves eating bugs. It gives him power. In the opening narration, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has a mix of daddy issues and an identity problem. But there’s more! He can’t break free from the chains that the Lord of the Darkness has around him. It makes for a lightning in a bottle waiting to blow up, and when he gets mad, mortals better beware.
