A Doomed Romance and Why The Mummy 4 Needs Continuity, Not Schisms

After many decades, The Mummy 4 is going back to its roots, and with most of the original cast back, just how will the story continue?

The Mummy 4 Young CastThis week, The Mummy 4 begins production, and I cannot wait to see it when it arrives next year. With much of the cast from the first two films back, I keep wondering whether the screenwriters will return to the lore that made us fall for these mummies in the first place. Yes, I am ready to hug them all, though perhaps we should not unwrap every rumour the trade magazines are reporting.

Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor are all back, and Universal Pictures has set the film for an October 15, 2027 release. That reunion is welcome, but the franchise needs more than a nostalgia roll call. It needs to return to the mythology that made the original films matter. Beni’s return, in particular, begs for an explanation. Did he escape Hamunaptra? Did he make a bargain with something while he was sealed inside?
