Do the Necronomicon! Evil Dead Burn Asks Where Is It Now?

The Deadites have their own agenda, but I’m more interested in what’s hiding between the Necronomicon’s pages. Evil Dead Burn adds intriguing lore while leaving the franchise’s tangled history open to speculation.

Necronomicon Ex-MortisBack in 1979, Sam Raimi wrote, directed, and produced Within the Woods as a proof of concept that would later become The Evil Dead. And although it wasn’t a huge success at first, I knew this film’s eventual cult status helped cement the legacy of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis! The reason isn’t what evoking the magiks can do, but why its continued existence, even in Evil Dead Burn, the latest film in this omniverse, is dangerous! I didn’t need to watch this film right away, but with Halloween nearly here, why not?

Variations of it have been explored across different mediums, and without it, I doubt this franchise could exist. Technically, there are three books in total, and when it can do more than summon demons, everyone should worry.

It can turn back time, offer rituals and recipes that mankind isn’t meant to know. And for those who insist on understanding every page, I’d be afraid. While mentions have been spliced in throughout the various films and unofficial material, this latest offering does something different which I like, and that’s give it a unified history that can cause some people to go mad! The ideas have been planted ever since Rise, and if it ever gets rediscovered, I’ll be running away.

The Naturom Demonto serves a purpose to explain why the Deadites exist, and with the latest film, its whereabouts are unknown. As for the Kandarian Dagger, which can be used to undo most of the magic, Joseph (Hunter Doohan) finds it after listening to some recordings from Benjamin Price (voiced by Michael Hurst). Joseph learns the Deadites will stop at nothing to destroy the blade, and that’s the tale viewers can expect. The fact both the living and the undead can use it says it all; this weapon chooses no favourites!

And since the Deadites are intent on possessing humans to get a foothold in the mortal realm, one price they pay is the active decay of the mind and body! In Evil Dead Burn, after Will (George Pullar) is targeted, it’s up to Joseph to find out what’s going on and try to put a stop to it! However, things don’t go well when big brother dies, and next up is their father (Erroll Shand), who proves it’s impossible to bury the dead.

But when no Evil Dead film can earn its keep without the one-liners, I wasn’t sure if I should call this movie a Raimi-approved product. When this film lacks the blessing from Cheryl, even that issue needs to be noted.

The Deadites want their stuff back. They don’t really care about the family dynamic, and had some better exposition been offered, I’d probably agree that this movie belongs in the continuity. As for who Ben is, I suspect he belongs to the same club as Raymond Knowby, whom we all met from the original films. The Circle of the Wise Men is a tiny piece of lore dump fans will recognize, though not everyone will.

As for what purpose they may play in this reimagining, only time will tell. I’d love to see someone play those roles in full, but sadly, there’s no plan to consolidate everything we know about the universe but were afraid to ask.

Thankfully, this movie is a partial homage to what makes the franchise great. It gives life to the Deadites by giving them more of a personality beyond what Raimi’s films offered. Although they exist as comic relief on one front and terror on two legs on another, it’s about time to give them some motivation on top! Even though this latest is mid-way on what may be a trilogy of films, there’s enough of a lore dump to make me wonder what the next film will entail. Who knows, we may finally hear that all these previous professors belong to an exclusive club of their own!

Evil Dead Burn

That’s the problem with long-running horror IPs. They’re not designed with continuity in mind. Although Ash Williams isn’t likely to return outright, at least Bruce Campbell has a way of sneaking up on you, like in Evil Dead Rise, where he appeared after all the credits. In Evil Dead Burn, I imagine that the photo of Joseph’s grandpa is actually Ash, using the nom de plume of Benjamin Price. Instead of saviour, he’s gone academic. And by doing so, he can reveal who the Deadites truly are, and why the world must prepare for the apocalypse! That’s assuming he had time to have kids.

Although this theory will show the films are disconnected from the series, Ash vs Evil Dead, that’s just an idea. It’d be nice to give him a greater purpose after opening Pandora’s box way back when. After all, if he can’t return the spirits from back when they came, then perhaps another generation will. One can hope, and that’s all I can say.
