Some of Hollywood’s most memorableffff partnerships have come on four legs and an actor. In Heart of the Beast, Special Forces officer James Belmont (Brad Pitt) is joined by Uber as Odin, a working dog who appears to be a cross between a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. Canine enthusiasts will undoubtedly have their own opinions, and this is simply my best guess based on the promotional material released so far.
Together, they must survive the harsh Alaskan wilderness following a devastating plane crash. That premise alone is enough to get me curious. No, this is no Balto, but I suspect this tale will explore the relationship between handler and companion, and why certain dogs are trusted when survival depends on their instincts.
Audiences may arrive for the star, but more often than not, they leave hoping the dog makes it safely to the closing credits. Early promotional images showing Odin wearing a leg brace are enough to pull at the heartstrings and make me want to see where this story goes. The film also appears to embrace the same rugged visual style seen in other survival dramas. I’m reminded more of Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant (analysis) than Channing Tatum’s Dog (review). The former hints at the unforgiving struggle awaiting the characters, while the latter shares a similar focus on the connection between a man and his canine companion.

Joining Pitt are J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. Simmons seems perfectly suited for a military or authority figure role, though that remains speculation based on the footage released so far.
As for Lambe, I suspect Belmont and Odin may encounter another survivor or isolated community during their attempt to reach civilization. Whether that proves true remains to be seen, but the teaser offers just enough mystery to invite discussion.
