No scientific knowledge is required to understand what Twisters, the spiritual sequel to the 1996 film, are about. Since time has passed. I suspect most of those storm chasers have moved on. And to bring this IP back in today’s age and concerning Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) works in favour of why we love these films. I’m hoping this lead will lead to a new set of films about chasing after EF4 class tornadoes.
While I’m still waiting for a film about someone coming up with the idea to turn the American South East into a super tornado zone to belt out volcanic ash into space, perhaps the idea isn’t too far-fetched. Maybe that’s how the planetary ecosystem worked during a prior epoch. In this tale, Carter wants to reduce the intensity of these windstorms, but sadly her first experience caused the opposite effect! For half the film, she’s trying to deal with survivor’s remorse.
Though the romance between her and Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) is the foundation of this film, I wanted to see how many towns are going to be torn apart! Usually, I check out these disaster films to observe what kinds of new digital carnage can be wrought. The additional drama can be hit-and-miss but thankfully here, the two share good chemistry and I wanted to see how their relationship would pan out.
After meeting Sean Casey more than a decade ago (he was in town for the IMAX premiere of Tornado Alley), and watching him document how some storm chasers navigate into the eye of the storm, I’m preferring more realism to drama. This documentary was amazing on a full sized screen, and Twisters come close.
Gone are the days of using socks and changing the angle of the camera to fashion the effect. Today, it’s all about the pixels. And in this film’s case, let’s hope all those damaged structures never happen in that magnitude! They might have, but that type of news rarely gets reported in my local news. While I’m more concerned about tsunamis and oceanic earthquakes affecting my region, perhaps it’s a good thing no one has made a movie out of that yet!
