Being a tween can be rough, and for Emerson (Summer H. Howell) to change schools, to go live in a rural community looks problematical if she’s not careful. When the movie is titled Spirit in the Blood and marketing suggests this film may be like Stephen King’s Carrie, I’m ready to see what can happen. That’s because the early moments of this film suggets she has precognitive abilities. As for whether than ca help save her, that’s a question I hope will get answered by the finale.
When not everyone in the small town of St. Belvedere do not take a liking to this new family moving in, I have to wonder what their problem is. Thankfully, attitudes change when the body of a lost child turns up, but is that enough? The idea developed and directed by Carly May Borgstrom suggests there’s a lot going on not only for this young girl, but also the family. However, when the mystery concerning why her parents want to relocate here isn’t fully answered, even I’m curious by the end of act one.
Although much of the drama concerns Em coming of age, I’m still curious about the stalker elements. This young girl can see things and what’s teased is as curious as any other tale concerning life outside of an urban enviorment. This film wants to be like Twin Peaks, but instead unfolds in Stranger Things territory.

As for what isn’t is in how fast Emerson makes friends with Delilah (Sarah-Maxine Racicot, pictured left). Apparently, she doesn’t have the ideal home life either, and despite a challenging start, they quickly bond. While I enjoyed seeing them form a coven with three more individuals to stay safe, I’m still wondering when the title of this film will truly manifest.
When considering the circumstances–and as for who the enemy is–maybe it’s just their fears about becoming sixteen that’s more of a concern. I was half waiting for that monster Emerson spotted from in the film to pop up! I was wondering about the whereabouts of the supernatural. Is it all made up? Or could the community be hiding a secret? While this film is vague at answering all that, at least just what these girls do to stay safe is front and centre.

Had these girls not become the tight knit group that they are, I doubt anyone would’ve survived. And as for what they can do next, perhaps a continuation is required to see who has survived to adulthood, if this story will mirror Rob Reiner’s Stand By Me. And as for those terrors they must face down, let’s hope none of those monsters are in close pursuit!
