Art photographer-turned-filmmaker Kourtney Roy has a film that explores the stranger side of life and cryptozoology. And when she makes her stamp on Kryptic quite surreal, if not erotic, I’m quite curious. Also, when this movie takes place in Southern British Columbia, where I live, I have to take an interest!
I find nothing wrong with making a film with some suggestive pornographic elements. And that’s because of what’s presented. This film isn’t too different from Sasquatch Sunset, to which I’ll post a review later this week.
This film shows Kay Hall (Chloe Pirrie) whose initial encounter with a Sooka, sets her off in search of answers X-Files style. After being surprised by a Bigfoot, and losing her memories after she records it, the journey she undertakes is questionable. Instead of wanting to show this footage off, she wants more evidence. When what happened altered her senses, she’s in search of rediscovering who she is but also wondering who can help.

Instead of going to someone with what she got, she decides it’s best to locate Barbara Valentine. This cryptozoologist also sought this creature out. But when considering the uncanny resemblance she has to this lady makes her wonder what the heck is happening! As a result, what’s presented in this movie gets trippy.
Also, writer Paul Bromley takes the best ideas from all the varied theories I know of concerning where Bigfoot comes from and makes it work. That can include the possibility of this cryptid existing outside of time and space; or be from another dimension. And in what Roy successfully conveys is a genuine sense of otherworldliness.
To be fair, Kryptic isn’t about figuring out where Bigfoot comes from. Instead, the journey Hall undergoes is more important. In the fictional backwater town of Blue Cliff, people have little to live for; most of them are country folk with nothing better to do. As for whether this production team knows of Blue Mountains, Oregon, where sightings are quite common, I’m sure they’re aware!
As for whether their knowledge is as eye-opening as Kay’s experience, it’s tough to say. If we’re to believe in everything that those paranormal “I want conclusive evidence” shows on History / Discovery channel offers, then it’s safe to say people disappear. Sometimes someone survives and has quite the tall tale!
When it comes to recognizing this heroine’s story, that’s when the finale gets confusing. This tale can either depict an alien abduction scenario gone wrong or it could borrow from Celtic lore. Sometimes, the Sidhe kidnaps a child in order to have one of its kind take its place. The fact changelings are involved gels with what this movie does. I’m being general here so as not to spoil the finale. When this work conveys a strong sense of being displaced, what the finale represents is perfect. While this work plays out more as a psychological drama, I feel magical realism comes into play too.
