The Librarians The Next Chapter is the Next Instalment for this Beloved IP

The dedication fans have for this The Librarians The Next Chapter will no doubt have a lot of people guessing at what this instalment will truly be about. Will it acknowledge all the lore the series revealed in season four?

The Librarians The Next Chapter (Not)! Title CardI’m honestly very surprised at how fast The CW is fast tracking reviving a series I wanted to see return for a long time. The Librarians The Next Chapter is a fantasy action adventure series that is one part Indiana Jones and another Carmen Sandeigo. Although the latter is a loosey goosey about with its globe-trotting and educational value, I’ve always loved this series back when it was a movie trilogy about searching for some lost treasure. Series creator Dean Devlin recently posted a picture on his Twitter/X account giving fans a tease on this latest instalment.

This franchise’s transition to a television serial was inevitable, even though it meant that fans are no longer following Flynn Carsen’s (Noah Wyle) exploits. He played the lone guardian Quest for the Spear (2004), Return to King Solomon’s Mines (2006) and Curse of the Judas Chalice (2008). Eventually, the torch was passed and the series The Librarians (2014-2018) sees Colonel Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn) become the leader of a new team. There’s Ezekiel Jones (John Harlan Kim), Cassandra Cillian (Lindy Booth) and Jacob Stone (Christian Kane). They all have unique skills to aid them in retrieving these artefacts and protecting them from nefarious figures from legends and lore intent on doing harm to the world.

Regarding what we know so far about the new series is this synopsis:

A Librarian–a custodian of a magical repository of the world’s most powerful and dangerous supernatural artefacts–from the past travels to the present and finds himself unable to return to his own time. When he returns to his castle, which is now a museum, he inadvertently releases magic across the continent. In order to set things right, he is given a new team of Librarians to help him clean up the mess he made.

And as for who will return and will not, TVLine reported that Christian Kane will be back. It’s unknown if anyone else will make a cameo, since by the title alone, this instalment takes place many years later, and it may not acknowledge events the former series explored. There’s a story concerning Nicole Noone that some felt deserved more attention, and as for revealing that the library is a living entity, that’s a doozy!

It’s safe to say Jessica Green (The Outpost) is the main protagonist. She plays Charlie Cornwall. According to the official character breakdown, “Having been rejected by the Library to serve as a Guardian–essentially the bodyguard of The Librarian–was at a low point in her life when she got the call to be a ‘special guardian’ on a trial basis. Trained in the military, her dedication and martial art skills are unquestionable. If she can keep the powers that be in line, she can achieve her dream to become a permanent member of the Library.”

Perhaps the reason this network is quick to bring back this series is that it wants to acknowledge its roots rather than be something people talk about in the past tense. A lot of fond favourites like Batwoman, Charmed, Dynasty, In the Dark, Legends of Tomorrow, and Roswell got cancelled following the acquisition by Nexstar; while other shows got to wrap its storyline up like in The Flash, others never had a chance. Out of all the superhero shows that didn’t get the axe, Superman & Lois is the only show that survives.

Although this network is said to be moving away from ‘Superhero’ type films by concentrating on more sports based programming, I’m glad the department heads are kind of changing their minds. To bring back those treasures from the early part of this century and last decade is a step in the right direction. I’d like to see more shows not necessarily similar to but catering to the fantastical. Let’s bring on a Xena revival!
