Spoiler Alert
For those who don’t want to see Disney remake Lilo and Stitch into a live action film, thankfully, Dynamite Comics is doing what the studio should’ve considered–and that’s to continue the story! Here, after the spunky team has paid their due, what happens next is to just live the life they’re used to. But when most of the galaxy is aware of how useful this blue furry alien is for any plan of conquest, what the first issue offers is a taste of them dealing with life outside of Hawaii!
I believe it’s about time this universe is being made bigger. What’s presented before was mostly about what goes on in this island nation or sees Stitch meet other young girls to be best friends to, especially after Lilo has grown up. Both Stitch and Ai (review), along with the Japanese series Stitch! (review) doesn’t belong in the same continuity, but any fan can see what this series is mainly about.
This latest thankfully doesn’t think about the “gotta catch them all” narrative. These other experiments might appear in later issues, but if the first chapter is any sign, I’m guessing they’re all in their happy place, too.

What’s presented is a simple and quick read. There’s not too much new information being offered here, and instead of taking a long-winded reintroduction of the world, writer Greg Pak nicely sums it up with a two-page spread from Lilo and Stitch’s point of view no less! In what he introduces is a new threat interested in harvesting the DNA from Experiment 626 to power robots!
The artwork by Giulia Giacomino is no different from the look that the movies featured. It’s as vibrant and colourful as the film!
And I can see that this talent doesn’t want to offer anything too radically different from what artist Chris Sanders originally designed. I still think of the series as his baby because he’s the voice of Stitch. As for whether he and Dean DeBlois are even aware of this expanded world, probably not. One has returned to the fold to be that voice, and the other is helming the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon!
As for whether I’d truly boycott both live-action film releases, until there’s a finished trailer, I’m willing to wait before passing judgement. And for a complete list of past comic book publications, please check out my 20th anniversary recap here.
