To Say Ghostbusters Back In Town Answers One Question Before Frozen Empire Helps Answer One Lingering Question

Ghostbusters Back in Town #1 Comic Book CoverPotential Spoiler Alert

A lot of comic books have been published featuring either The Real Ghostbusters, some version thereof, or exist in its own world. Just how long Dark Horse Comics intends to publish in regards to the Spengler family depend on the contract. At least to say they’re “Back in Town” bridges the gap between Afterlife and Frozen Empire is a step in the right direction. Author Greg Pak wastes no time to get the clan exploring some personal issues.

According to ScreenRant, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are overseeing the project. I assume that means they will approve any pitches regarding what kind of adventures this group may have. It can be like Stranger Things or become truly spooky, something past takes never fully done before. IDW’s run has always had a bit of kookiness involved and the crossovers are not canon.

And while this issue sees the new Spengler family familiarise themselves with the old digs (the Firehouse), it seems a ghost has to exist to challenge them. But first, Phoebe and Trevor will have to explore life in the big city!

This release comes hot on the heels of the film (movie review coming soon) and it answers one plot hole. I’m assuming that for the cinematic universe, these two are going to be homeschooled whereas in the comic they tried to attend normal school. Half the tale shows the problems of adapting, and although 20 pages are hardly enough to say everything, what’s presented at least gets fans up to speed. And it also sets up the motivations why a minor ghost takes an interest in them.

Kyle Lambert‘s front cover art is a lot more attractive than the Sunday funnies style of Blue Delliquanti. Each artist has his or her own approach to distinguish themselves and I don’t want to judge from the first issue alone. This talent’s webpage shows he’s a lot more diverse. Hopefully, by the second or third, we’ll get more pictures of this minor supernatural threat.

All I can hope for is that Dark Horse Comics’ licence will allow for exploring those lingering questions I have after seeing Frozen Empire. I’m glad the film’s showrunners have final say. Maybe they’ll even pitch narrative points to address the issues I have with the film. If true, I’m sure fans will get to see more of Melody!
