Kaiju-Pow! The slow and steady rollout of Playmates line of Godzilla vs Kong toys have wave two set for Spring 2021 (according to Twitter) and as for whether I spotted them sitting on shelves too early is debatable.
Trolls on online forums will be just that, ruining my excitement of a late self discovery. I’ve seen the earlier wave of releases and they’re not as cool, When local governments say stay at home as much as possible, any find I make at a big box store for toys and household supply restocking is not meant to time with the release schedule of products for my hobbies.
With the movie finally headed to theatres and online in March, the products now available in stores are always exciting to examine. I missed my opportunities to purchase the light up Identity Discs from TRON Legacy. they were gone, faster than I thought, but this time I’m on the ball.
Plus, all my money is on Godzilla winning. Sorry Kong, but no dollars will be spent on you. Sure, you’ll land some nasty bruises on my favourite radioactive beast, but as these figures show, Monarch is involved. The Heave is the Hollow Earth Anti-Gravity Vehicle, the OSPREY is a helicopter (according to online sources), the ape has an axe and plane, and Godzilla has a radio tower and his atomic breath. Maybe the ape will get impaled? We’re not certain.
The figures themselves look good. As points of articulation are appropriate for each beast, with Kong missing the prerequisite fur (it’s all plastic for health and safety concern) and, the text hints part of the story will take place on Skull Island. Anyone wanting spoilers will find enough information in these sets to be informed about where some of the fights and discoveries will take place.
I’ve been curious as to what the bat-like creature was since it flew by in the last trailer. Warbat and Skull Crawler are two new creatures. the battle for dominance in two worlds may well be the story here; the Hollow Earth (as seen in the last film) and Middle Earth, where the humans live, are the two battlegrounds where only one can reign as the true alpha. The vehicles that come with the figures are merely props, set pieces as we watch the titans duke it out. With a girl perhaps attached to guiding Kong’s fate, it’ll be interesting to find out whose other lives will be affected.
And I’m hoping some theaters can open next month to watch it on the big screen.
While the toys won’t tell all about the film, Legendary Comics will. They announced a few days ago an exciting set of companion graphic novels. Both will feature prequels to two of Earth’s mightiest titans for the young reading audience. There’s even the official novelization to explain to readers what Monarch represents, and a whole lot more. On the schedule includes:
March 30th, 2021
Delve into an incredible mystery, generations in the making. At the dawn of the atomic age, humanity awakens life forms beyond imagination, unleashing monumental forces of nature. This explosive, larger-than-life adventure is the perfect way for fans to glimpse the new Godzilla before seeing the film in theaters.
Kingdom KongThis work follows a group of highly skilled military pilots gathered together on Skull Island to see who has ‘the right stuff’ to take on a dangerous mission into the hollow earth. One of the pilots, Audrey, is haunted by the memories of a monstrous clash with one of Godzilla’s titanic rivals that left deep scars. When Skull Island is attacked by Camazotz, a bat-like Titan, Audrey must to come to terms with her inner demons, and finding his home newly threatened, Kong must rise to face this usurper that would plunge the world into perpetual night.
