Although we’re not getting the continuation with what he fashioned after Tron Legacy, the concept is still there. According to JustJared.com, the film is due to begin shooting in Vancouver come August, and on Variety.com, Jodie Turner-Smith is the latest star announced to appear in this film. She will be joining Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Greta Lee.
Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is the director this time round. He’s a very competant director to handle this property after having more than a few films made for Disney under his belt. And the talents tapped to pen this instalment add Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne to the mix. Series creator Steven Lisberger is no doubt the lead of this writing team.
In what we know so far (from Variety) is “Leto will play Ares, the manifestation of a program that becomes sentient and crosses over into the human world, with Lee as a video game programmer and tech company CEO who aims to protect her world-changing technology…. Production on the film is set for August (an actors strike notwithstanding).”
Hopefully the movie won’t take place too much in our reality. What made this series fantastic is in the adventures in the digital realm. I’m sure there’ll be a lot of back and forth going on since we’re dealing with an insurgency into one world, and whoever discovers this will have to fight it at the source. That is, they’ll have to enter the grid, and find the means to shut it down.
Hopefully the digital world can survive and be hooked up to the rest of the Internet. The last movie revealed that this world was built in a closed system, and it only survived because Flynn made it so.
As for who survived the purge since the last film, that’ll be the thing fans will want to see. The programs remaining will no doubt keep to routine, but for the rogue AI, he’s no doubt wanting more! Although the details revealed so far imply we won’t see past characters returning, things can change as more news drops.
In the meantime, fans can go enjoy the Light Cycle ride available at Disney World Park and mark 2025 on their calender since that’s when this film is expected to be released.
