LeVar Burton Proves the World’s Children Love a Good Book

When it comes to a child’s early learning, Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood, Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant and Puddle Lane are a handful of shows that brought the joy of reading to young viewers through their half hour time slot. But of these programs, none made the joy of reading such a focal point as Reading Rainbow. Hosted and executive produced by LeVar Burton, the series ran on PBS television stations from 1983 to 2006.

In 2012, Burton helped to create a Reading Rainbow iPad application which became the #1 educational app for kids.

And with the latest project, Burton is using Kickstarter to raise funds of 1 million dollars. But little did Burton realize he would achieve his monetary goal in less than one day.

 

“I am overwhelmed. Thank you so much,” said a teary-eyed Burton, “I am so proud that this community has come together to support this effort.”

This effort will be to bring a all new Reading Rainbow that will be made available to any child with Internet access and to make available Reading Rainbow’s digital library of books and videos to low-income schools for free.
