Nuclear Blast Records handles the band’s releases, and for anyone who likes their metal big, melodic, and unapologetically epic, Majestica is well worth checking out. But when Johansson started posting his takes on beloved 80s and 90s cartoon themes very recently, that’s when I took notice. He clearly has a deep affection for the Disney Afternoon catalogue, and his take on TaleSpin absolutely rips for all the right reasons. Then there’s DuckTales, along with a few surprises outside the usual nostalgia lane, including Sailor Moon sung in Swedish.
Hopefully the right people help introduce this talent to an even bigger audience. His take on Meat Loaf’s “I Would Do Anything for Love” is incredible, and when he’s playing most of the instruments himself and editing the video too, it’s hard not to be impressed. What really makes him stand apart, though, is the voice. He’s a trained tenor, and the following selections offer just a small sample of his range. I’m glad to be introducing him once again to audiences he may not have expected to reach.
Along the way, Johansson spent seven years as the lead guitarist for Sabaton, one of the biggest names in power metal, before stepping away in 2024 to put everything back into his own work. There’s no sense of bad blood there, just an artist following his passion with both hands.
And then there’s the YouTube channel. He releases covers of classic hits on a near-weekly basis. We’re talking ABBA reimagined as a metal anthem, and hearing him tackle Queen in his own style is a real thrill. Over the years, he’s delivered enough 80s and 90s nostalgia to fill several greatest hits collections. Turning those songs into pure hard metal is no small feat, and they hit hard enough to inspire a proper headbang.
