Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock is Boldly Changing What This Detective Hasn’t Done Before

Young Sherlock Poster\Whether we need another youthful take on iconic heroes before their prime may well depend on how Young Sherlock is received. With fond memories of the psychedelic mystery tale Young Sherlock Holmes still vivid in my mind, Guy Ritchie faces a challenge in winning over older fans.

The official trailer from Prime Video certainly looks promising. Fiennes Tiffin comes across as more enthusiastic than stagnant in the role of Sherlock Holmes, and overall the casting and reinterpretation work. It’s arguably more engaging than the Robert Downey Jr. version, though still a fair distance from what those raised on the Basil Rathbone classics might hold as definitive.

This origin story is set to premiere March 4, 2026, and looks poised to deliver action alongside a dose of intrigue, particularly through the oriental ally glimpsed in the teaser. Zine Tseng plays Princess Gulun Shou’an, a young Chinese royal with ties to the school both Holmes and Moriarty attend. Just what role she has to play piques my curiosity, especially as this marks her second appearance in a major series. Fans of 3 Body Problem will likely recognize her, and I find myself wondering if she may be the next streaming starlet to make the leap to Hollywood.

Although the lens is a modern one, the Victorian era itself was hardly pristine. It was a time when Britain saw itself as the centre of a vast empire, projecting power while grappling with social stagnation and unease. Popular fiction often reflected that tension. Fresh blood was craved, hence the rise of figures like Dracula. As for why Holmes still matters, it’s simple. We haven’t had a truly gripping detective yarn in years, and it feels like the right moment for one to step back into the fog.

From the Press Release:

When a charismatic, youthfully defiant Sherlock Holmes meets none other than James Moriarty, he finds himself dragged into a murder investigation that threatens his liberty. Sherlock’s first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy, leading to an explosive showdown that alters the course of his life forever. Unfolding in a vibrant Victorian England and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.

Previously announced cast members of Young Sherlock include Dónal Finn (The Wheel of Time), Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), Natascha McElhone (Halo), Max Irons (Condor), and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech). Guy Ritchie directs the first two episodes and executive produces.
