The Ugly Duchess
Oct 2-4, 2025, 8:00 PM
Hapax Theatre
932 Balmoral Rd
Margaret, Countess of Tyrol, was reputed to be the ugliest woman in history. Nicknamed Maultasch — “Pocket-Mouth” — the rumours of her hideous visage combined with her audacity to rule as a woman made her the perfect scapegoat for her subjects’ fears during the height of the Plague. Despite her notoriety, her lands on the marches of the Holy Roman Empire were valuable, and her dynastic ties made her politically useful to ambitious rivals. Although Margaret, Countess of Tyrol, is no Wicked Witch of the West, her story asks: what does it mean to “rule with a man’s heart?”
Mature content advisory (13+): depictions of death/murder, intimate partner abuse, infant death, misogyny.
