Check In If You Dare: 13 Terrifying Videogame Haunted Houses for Halloween

Honestly, I doubt I can get through all the videogame haunted houses that are out there. When considering the classics to what’s new, there’s a lot! And to narrow down what are my top thirteen choices, that’s tough to do! I’d probably lose my sanity if I tried to play them all over a Halloween weekend. By the end, I’d probably look wide-eyed and droopy, with huge shadows underneath my eyes! While I have my favourite video game haunted houses to crawl through, I’ll only offer full entries on five titles I’m looking forward to playing, with the rest noted with a trailer.

From campy ghost hunts and psychological journeys into grief to shifting mansions, tightly scripted nightmares, and even a house that fights back, I think I’ve covered just about every kind of haunted house possible.

Look on, if you dare, because honey, even after one night of ghostbusting, those ghosts will just come back! And before we embark on this spooky little journey, I have just one thing to say: Sorry, Luigi, you’ve been dethroned.

Alone in the Dark (2024)

Genre / Focus: Survival Horror / Exploration + Combat

Amnesia: Rebirth (2020)

Genre / Focus: Psychological Survival Horror / Exploration + Puzzles

Deck of Haunts (2025; Console Release 2026)

Genre / Focus: Roguelike Deckbuilder / Mansion Building + Strategy

This time, you’re the haunted house. By day, you build a maze of rooms, from kitchens and bell towers to special chambers like the Phobia Room, arranging them to protect your Heart room, the core of your supernatural power. By night, you lure visitors inside and play cards to unleash spirits, shift corridors, and drive intruders to the brink of madness — or kill them.

Harvesting their essence strengthens your mansion, but tougher opponents keep arriving, so you’ll need to protect that Heart room. Your deck grows as you unlock new cards, with tools of terror like screams, phantoms, creaking floors, and shifting walls. A roaming Witch summoned from the bell tower adds even more terror to the mix.

Release: PC on May 7, 2025; consoles on October 8, 2026

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake (2026)

Genre / Focus: Survival Horror / Exploration + Ghost Photography

Haunted House (2023)

Genre / Focus: Roguelite Adventure / Exploration + Stealth

This reimagining of Atari’s classic leans on stealth and light combat, so sneaking past threats is usually smarter than picking a fight. Each time a shadowy spectre knock Lyn out, she wakes up back at the entrance, facing a new floor layout and rearranged enemies. That’s where the roguelite side comes in. When she’s here to find her uncle who is a famous treasure hunter, just what he brought home may well be the cause of the house being haunted!

And as for why her friends are caught up in the mess, no one can say. But once they are freed, they become playable characters who can dive deeper into the mansion. And the collectibles and lore are full of nods to the original and other Atari favourites. The whimsical, cartoonish art style rides the line between goofy and spooky. If you only have a spare evening, the next entry is much shorter and just as happy to be shared with a friend.

Haunted Investigation (2023)

Genre / Focus: Indie Horror / Exploration + Mystery

Haunted Investigation drops you into an abandoned mansion filled with supernatural mysteries. You can explore alone or bring along a friend, since the game supports up to two players. Searching for clues and solving puzzles is the main job, though supernatural threats keep interrupting the investigation. When two players team up, they have to work together to uncover the dark secrets hiding in the house. Your choices lead to multiple endings, which gives this short haunted-house adventure a reason to revisit its dark corridors.

A single run averages roughly 35 to 40 minutes, so it’s an easy one to squeeze in on a weeknight. If you’d rather spend your night shift with the dead instead of the living, the next job is waiting at a funeral home.

Heartworm (2025)

Genre / Focus: Retro Survival Horror / Exploration + Camera Combat

Layers of Fear (2016; Reimagining 2023)

Genre / Focus: Narrative Horror / Exploration + Puzzles

In this game, players guide a troubled painter through a sprawling, ever-shifting Victorian mansion, with twists around every corner that threaten to derail his obsession with finishing a masterpiece. Rooms shift, corridors loop, and childhood memories warped by fear and guilt expose the damage done to his family.

This is a challenging game, and Bloober Team’s 2023 reimagining, built on Unreal Engine 5, is billed as the definitive edition. It bundles the original game with *Layers of Fear 2* and all the released DLC, then adds new chapters that tie the stories together. The sequel swaps the mansion for a mysterious ocean liner, where you play an actor chasing the role of a lifetime.

From a mansion that rearranges itself, we move to a family estate that doesn’t want you to leave.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (2024) and Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019)

Genre / Focus: Action-Adventure / Exploration + Puzzles

MADiSON (2022)

Genre / Focus: Psychological Horror / Exploration + Puzzles

The Mortuary Assistant (2022)

Genre / Focus: Simulation Horror / Investigation + Rituals

Pacify (2019)

Genre / Focus: Cooperative Horror / Exploration + Escape

You’ve just been hired at Paranormal Activity Helpers Incorporated, or PAH Inc., which sounds corny but pays great. The job is to check out allegedly haunted locations, starting with a house where a possessed girl shifts between calm and violent states. Exploring the property reveals clues about what happened there and how to stop it.

Other missions take you to an eerie farm, the woods where a witch lurks, and even PAH headquarters during a power outage, each with its own monsters, lore, and gameplay. You’ll learn to avoid, pacify, weaken, and capture creatures such as possessed dolls, an invisible witch, and shadow monsters that steal your items. Play alone or team up online to keep the girl pacified long enough to finish the job.

The next entry is a bit of a stretch for a haunted-house list, but it’s worth the detour.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Genre / Focus: Survival Horror / Exploration + Combat
