For anyone who lives in the Pacific Northwest, it is common knowledge that Vancouver Island is one of the toughest places to host an event. The lethargy displayed by the fan community backed by decades of failed events, an unhealthy fan club scene and conventions that once shone only to dull and disappear is enough to make any organizer think twice.

But one has to admire the sheer bravery of any person who tries to create something wonderful for the local community. Three such people are Evan Hatch, Carson Upton, and Michael Lum creators of GottaCon, a gaming event that lasted a handful of years before closing. Replaced by LANtasy, both are proof that southern Vancouver Island isn’t big enough to support two such events.

One of anime’s biggest names is coming to the Seattle and will be found at Sakura-Con 2017, the Pacific Northwest’s largest anime convention. Celebrating 20 years, it is only fitting character designer, writer, and manga artist Kenichi Sonoda will be one of this year’s guests.

Sonoda’s career started in the mid-80’s at studio Artmic, where he became a character designer for some of Artmic’s best titles such as Bubblegum Crisis (where he produced the original look of the Knight Sabers team), Riding Bean, and the Gall Force series. You might call Katsuyuki Konishi (小西 克幸) Koutarou Amon of Tokyo Ghoul, Ozma Lee of Macross Frontier, Tom Tanaka of Durarara!!, or Bulat of Akame ga Kill!. But no matter what character you know him for, he is widely regarded as one of the most in-demand voice actors in the business today and he is coming to Anime Revolution in Vancouver this summer.

An award-winning actor, Konishi got his first break as Volfogg on Sunrise’s 1997 animated series The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. He would go on to reprise Volfogg in the 2000 OVA The King of Braves GaoGaiGar Final. That was the start of what would be a successful career for Konishi voicing many now favourite characters of anime. His list of credits includes Laxus Dreyar of Fairy Tail, Johann Trinity of Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Pinion of Suisei no Gargantia, and Raikou in two Pokémon feature films.

Tsukino-Con, the little Victoria convention that could, is growing at a steady rate and may have its unique place among the larger conventions of the Pacific Northwest. The handlers of Tsukino, which rose in February 2010 from the ashes of the seven-year run that was Kei-Kon, have taken few risks.

Those behind Tsukino have adhered to the formula of having their con grow at its own rate rather than take on bigger cons in a head-to-head (Sakura-Con and Emerald City Comicon). Tsukino’s list of past guests is an impressive one, especially for a con of it’s size. Names of Sarah Anne Williams (Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica), Tracey Moore (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon), Josh Grelle (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, Date A Live), J. Michael Tatum (Baccano!, Heroic Age), Terri Doty (Seikoku no Dragonar, Joukamachi no Dandelion), and Kensho Ono (Aldnoah Zero, Pokemon XY&Z) have appeared previously.
