‘Attack on Titan’ Artistry Sends Shivers Down My Spine

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Being a fan of cosplay (although not a cosplayer myself), I’m an admirer of the process of costume creation. It’s the endless hours of sowing together, sometimes with nothing more than simple needle and thread, pieces of cloth that will take gradual shape before a finished outfit is worn for all to see at a an event. To me this is the side of fandom I show neither the talent nor the want to become a part of. Watching from the sidelines is my equivalency of having cake and eating it too. But among the cosplay it is, at times, easy for me to overlook the make-up. The artistry that completes the persona one will present does not always get the attention it so richly deserves.

That is why I am so awed by the make-up by JanViper Fajardosa Menes of the Titans on display. Menes, who is from the Philippines, really puts the scare into me. Using her body as a canvas Menes creates a creepy yet cool look of the on Attack on Titan’s behemoths.

Smiling Titan

The smiling Titan from series 1 and 2 is the titan that killed and devoured Eren Jaeger’s mother after the wall that surrounds the city was breached by the Colossal and Armored Titans during the fall of the Shinganshina District in 845. Seeing his mother killed in front of him, causes the young Eren to seek vengeance on every Titan.

Eren Titan

Eren’s Titan form is physically taller (15 metres), and proportioned with a more defined muscle mass. His tongue and ears become elongated and his eyes become deeply sunken. Other physical features is a hooked nose, and a jagged jaw where the flesh has receded around the mouth.

Eren’s transformation to his Titan form takes effect when his blood is drawn (he discovers his ability when his arm is severed after being swallowed by a bearded Titan).

Menes has a Facebook page with a following of roughly 1,800 followers> He works as an Art Editor for the University of Batangas’ newspaper, The Westernian Advocate. You can follow her on Facebook by visiting https://www.facebook.com/Bimbibap or her Twitter at https://twitter.com/Bimbibabap.
