Norwescon 38 Dates and Guests Announced!

Norwescon38With Norwescon 37 only just a recent memory, it didn’t take long for the organizers to announce not only the dates to the upcoming Norwescon 38 but the guests as well. And for those of you who are big readers of high fantasy, you may jump for joy when you read further.

Norwescon 38 will take place next year on April 2nd to the 5th and it will still be held at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel near the Seattle Airport.

The theme for the convention will be Distant Horizons, Epic Adventures.

The guests of Honour will be:

Science Guest of Honour: Dr. Amy Mazinger

Mazinger1Mazinger is an astronomer specializing in astrophysical instrumentation and infrared astronomy. she received a B.Sc. in Physics from Stanford University with honors (1996), and holds an M.Sc. in Astronomy from California Institute of Technology (2000) and a PhD in Astronomy from the University of California, Los Angeles (2003).

A principal investigator for the NEOWISE project to study minor planets she is also involved in the proposed Near Earth Object Camera space telescope mission. Mazinger is the Deputy Project Scientist for the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and has appeared on the History Channel television series The Universe. She also appeared in the documentary featurette “Stellar Cartography: On Earth” included on the Star Trek Generations home video release (March 2010).

In 2002, Asteroid (234750) Amymainzer was named after her.

Artist Guest of Honour: Boris Vallejo

Vallejo is an award-winning painter and illustrator who works mainly in the fantasy and erotica genres.

Vallejo won the British Fantasy Award as best artist in 1979 for his painting The Amazon Princess and Her Pet. He has previously illustrated works involving such licenses as Tarzan, Conan the Barbarian, Doc Savage, and Star Wars.

He has created numerous film posters including Barbarella (1968), Knightriders (1981), Q (1982), Barbarian Queen (1985), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985) and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters (2007), co-created with artist Julie Bell.

Bell is an award-winning painter, fantasy and wildlife artist. She is also a former nationally ranked competitive body builder and fantasy model. She is the winner of the 2008 Chesley Award for Artistic Achievement.

Bell has designed such music albums as Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose and Hang Cool Teddy Bear. She has also worked on advertising campaigns for Coca-Cola, Toyota and Nike, Inc., and has co-created the poster for the film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters (2007).

Author Guest of Honour: George R. R. Martin

Martin is a multi-award winning author, short story writer and is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

Martin has written for such publications as Galaxy magazine and Analog. Martin is also an accomplished television writer who’s stories have been seen on The Twilight Zone (1985), Beauty and the Beast (1987), and The Outer Limits (1995).

One of Martin’s many published works includes the Game of Thrones books which was adapted into a successful HBO television series.
